Dining in Vegas Dining in Vegas I have eaten around the Las Vegas Valley for many years now. First as a visitor and now as a resident. I have been a connoisseur of food, both fine dining and not for most of my life. I would like to let people know where I think are the best (and worst) places to eat in my newest home town of Las Vegas. Please come back to see more restaurant reviews. Monday, September 26, 2016 Ron's Steakhouse in Arizona Charlie's on Decatur Category: Steakhouse - Ron's Steakhouse Ron's is tucked away in the middle of Arizona Charlie's. The front entrance is a dual door that leads into a small hostess station. The hostess was very nice and seated me as soon as I walked in. The restaurant is very tiny. There are about a dozen and a half tables ranging from seating two to eight people. I was seated at a table for two. There I sat for about ten minutes before someone came by and brought me bread and three types of butter. He came back a few minutes later to give me some water. It was another five minutes or so before my waiter even came by to see if I wanted anything else to drink. I did order a glass of wine. They do have a nice selection of wines. It took several minutes to bring me my wine, then the waiter disappeared for a few more minutes before taking my order. I started with a wedge salad. The salad comes with onions, tomato, egg, blue cheese crumble, bacon, and dressing. I asked for the salad to come with dressing and bacon only. The waiter asked me if I wanted onions, which I said no and if I wanted crumble which I also said no. These are the only two items not on the salad. It had tomatoes, egg, and bacon (which I did want). I cannot eat egg so I had to scrape everything off to get to the wedge. So I also had to remove all the bacon and ended with iceberg and thousand island only. I know I should have sent it back, but I did not feel like it. I ordered an 8 oz filet and a side of Ron's Special Au-Gratin Potatoes as my entree. By the way, the bread and butter offering was quite tasty. The plate the filet arrived on was nicely dressed. It had a dolup of mashed potato with a criss cut chip in it. It also had a few nicely prepared mushrooms and a teaspoon of garlic and herb butter. The filet looked nice in the darkened room. I did notice when cutting into and tasting it that it did not have any sear on it. It was cooked the perfect medium rare I had asked for, but no char. When I bit into it I was expecting the flavor to jump out at me. You know when you bite into a nice steak you expect the flavor to be in an 8 to 10 range of flavor. Well this was more of a 4 or 5. It wasn't flavorless, but not extremely flavorful either. The Au-Gratin Potatoes were full of flavor though. They were very tasty and the high point of the entire meal. I decided I needed some, so I did a search on Yelp to see where they say the best pizza in Vegas is. Many new restaurants came up in the search. Novecento came up as one of the best pizzas in town. They have an imported Italian oven at 900 degrees. That is very impressive to me. I went to the one in Henderson as it is the closest one to my house. When you first go in and look at the place you notice there is not much ambiance. You stand in line and order your pizza and sit down after ordering and paying. They are more like a fast food restaurant than a nice pizza place. I ordered a small pepperoni pizza and started off with a small salad. The salad came out right away and it was very good. It is nice and small and was price appropriate. The pizza was not far behind. Coming out of a 900 degree oven you can imagine how hot it was. I like my pizza just short of burning the roof of your mouth, so I picked up the knife and fork and dug right in. I got a piece that had every thing the pizza had to offer. When I put it in my mouth the first and only thing I tasted was the sauce. This was a constant while eating the pizza. I couldn't taste the pepperoni, or the cheese or the pie dough. I could tell that the cheese had a nice texture to it and sat well in my mouth. I couldn't tell anything about the pepperoni, nothing. Hot, mild, salty, sweet, nothing. It might as well have not even been on the pizza. Another thing that bothered me was that I could tell that the dough was undercooked. I knew that from the first bite. When the pizza cooled enough for me to pick up a slice the whole slice sagged. There wasn't even the slightest bit of rigidity to it. The outside of the crust was slightly browned, but not like I would expect it to be. I don't know what was wrong that day. Maybe the oven wasn't up the temp. Maybe the pizza was pulled from the oven too soon. Maybe the person making the pizza wasn't being attentive. I just don't know. I will give it another try at some point. But for now I don't don't know when because I was not impressed and there are a lot of other pizza restaurants to try in Las Vegas. It took me a few months to get there, but I finally did. We were seated very quickly and the waitress got to us the moment we were seated. I ordered a beer and my wife ordered a soda. It did take a long time to get our drinks. I had to ask about my beer a second time. I did cut them some slack because of how busy they were and it appeared they were a bit short staffed. The place has a simple decor. But it does not stand out as anything special. It is just pleasant, nothing more. Guy has put out an eclectic menu here. It is only two pages, so not a huge selection, but it is a pleasant selection consisting of Salad's, Wings, Burgers, BBQ, Fries and desserts. I had a chili bowl. The taste was pretty good, but for the price I expected a little bit more. I think Guy's is a good place to give a try. I may or may not go back myself.
